Drink to Your Health!

We are not talking about alcohol, but the elixir of life: water.  Without water there wouldn’t be life, and our bodies crave it.  The adult human body is made up of about 65 % water.  With old age, the body’s water content sinks to about 50%.  Because water is so vital, is necessary to hydrate the body throughout the day.  It is a matter of good health.

What Happens during Dehydration?

If the body receives too little fluids, it not only dehydrates, but the body’s metabolism cannot work efficiently and toxins that are otherwise flushed out remain in the cells.  Particularly older people and children should drink fluids regularly, because thirst appears less frequently.  Therefore, it is a good idea to drink water even before you are thirsty.

Why is Water so Important?

Whether you believe it or not, if you drink enough water, you remain not only mentally fit, but your skin will also keep its youthful glow.  The skin is usually the first indicator that you are dehydrated.  It becomes dry and rough.

What to Drink?

In addition to water, try mixing things up with fruit spritzers or teas.  These will give you some variety and therefore may motivate you to drink more.  Avoid lemonades, however, due to their high sugar content.  Coffee may be consumed in moderation.

How Much to Drink?

The latest research has indicated that the previously recommended eight glasses of water per day for everyone appears to be a myth.  In other words, researchers have found that drinking excessive amounts of water will not necessarily add health benefits.  Therefore, a good rule of thumb is to drink whenever you are thirsty, unless you are doing strenuous exercise or live in a hot, dry climate.  Also, it is best to drink water over the course of the day, because your intestines can only absorb .2 litres every half an hour.  One final tip: Leave fluids in plain view (i.e., on your desk) so that you are more apt to drink.
