Beauty icon Marilyn Monroe epitomized the allure of blonde women in this legendary fifties film.  More than fifty years later, Reese Witherspoon strutted flirtatiously across the big screen in the comedy Legally Blonde.  But why does blonde hair enrapture most men?  According to various studies, the number of men who favour blondes varies between thirty and sixty percent.   In all studies, however, it was the most popular hair colour, particularly in Northern European countries.



Where does blonde hair come from?


According to Japanese researchers, the first blonde hair came into existence about 11,000 years ago in Europe due to a gene mutation.  Researchers accounted for a staggeringly quick spread of this mutation because it coincided with an ice age.  Many men perished due to the heightened danger of hunting and searching for food, leaving a disproportionately large number of women.  The uncommon attributes of blonde hair and blue eyes resulted in these women having better chances with the remaining men.  This is how the recessive blonde gene spread rapidly across Europe.
